Liver Disease in the UAE

Rates of liver disease are high in the region, but the risk can often be reduced with lifestyle changes.

Understanding Liver Disease

Liver disease refers to several conditions that can affect and damage your liver, such as non-alcohol fatty liver disease and hepatitis. If it isn’t treated, over time, liver disease can cause scarring (cirrhosis) and lead to serious complications.

Liver disease is often caused by being overweight or an undiagnosed infection. Fatty liver disease is more common in people who are diabetic or have high levels of cholesterol. In the UAE, due to the high number of people living with such lifestyle diseases, many adults are at risk of liver disease.

You can reduce the risk of many types of liver disease with lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight. Learn more about the causes and symptoms of liver disease, and what you can do to prevent it, here.

Our Liver Disease Program

The Liver Disease Program at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Digestive Disease Institute offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment for the entire spectrum of liver diseases.

The program offers outpatient evaluation for many liver diseases, including fatty liver disease, a common condition that is caused by the storage of extra fat in the liver. It can often be prevented or reversed by lifestyle changes. In some people it has no symptoms and doesn’t cause serious problems. In others, it can cause serious liver damage. Learn more about fatty liver disease here.

The program also offers inpatient care for those with liver cancer and advanced liver disease, such as liver failure and related complications.
